As the popularity of solar panel systems increases, so does the demand for better aesthetics and a greater choice of appearance. In this blog, we take an in-depth look at the growing trend of specifying all black solar panels.
Out with the blue and in with the new!
Traditionally solar panels have had a blue appearance and a silver aluminium frame. This is mostly due to the manufacturing process. An anti-reflective coating is applied to the panel to help the PV module absorb as much light as possible. This coating has a blue hue. Customers are increasingly demanding a cleaner look for their solar system, and why not, with many solar panel systems covering the majority of the domestic roof they need to look great and well as being great at absorbing sunlight.
As manufacturing techniques have evolved and production cost fallen a wider variety of appearances have become available, enter the all black solar panel.
Not all black solar panels are the same!
We have a range of all black solar panels in our store, and whilst the differences are subtle, and mainly due to manufacturer descriptions, it pays to know which you are looking to add to the solar project. The appearance of the panel is down to three main components: The solar cell, the frame and the backing sheet. Rather than a silver frame these panels adopt a sleek, black frame. The back sheet is changed for a black sheet rather than white. To compensate for a slight reduction in efficiency manufacturers look to use higher-efficiency cells.
Black Solar Panels, what are the advantages?
1. Clean appearance and modern aesthetics. A big advantage of installing black solar panels is the modern, cool look they provide. Whether your project is an on-roof solar panel mounting or a sleek in-roof solar panel system an all black appearance adds style and energy saving technology to your home or business.
2. Black Solar Panels use Monocrystalline silicon wafers. These types of panels are more efficient than traditional Polycrystalline modules. They convert more of the sun's light into energy. The black appearance is better at absorbing light than the blue colour often found in solar panels.
Are there any disadvantages of black solar panels?
The only disadvantage of a monocrystalline black solar panel over a polycrystalline blue panel is the cost. But that is coming down and they are becoming cheaper to manufacture meaning more efficient, better looking panels are more competitive than before.
